The Practice Challenge is suitable for all woodwind instruments. Designed to help students learn how to practice efficiently and not just play through things when they are at home. As teachers we explain how to practice, telling students to play small sections, clap rhythms etc. We do all these things in the lessons but then when at home many students just play through pieces and then wonder why they don't improve as quickly as they perhaps do in the lesson.
The card and dice combination helps students learn how to practice. As part of each practice session they do they should roll the dice 3 times and follow the instructions on the card for each of the dice throws.
- play the first 4 bars of your piece 4 times slowly .
- pick 2 notes and slur from one to the other smoothly.
- pick 2 lines of your piece and clap the rhythms.
- pick a note and set a timer, see how long you can hold the note without it wobbling.
Some of the challenges may be slightly too hard for an absolute beginner but it does state on the card to just roll the dice again if you cannot do the challenge set. (only about 2 of the challenges are too difficult)
Included in the challenge is a double sided Practice Challenge card, a twenty sided dice, a small bag for dice and an envelope.
