Johan Ferreira
Johan Ferreira is an oboist in South Africa, currently serving as the principal oboist of the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra. He regularly appears in the ad-hoc sections of the Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra, Free State Symphony, the KZN Philharmonic, and the Eastern Cape Philharmonic.
Recent concerto engagements included the Bach Double Concerto for violin and oboe with violinist Sampson Diamond (with the JPO) and the Strauss Concerto for oboe (with the FSSO). His playing has been described as “surreal” (artSMART.co.za) and “insightful and outstanding” (Volksblad, November 2019). A keen chamber musician, Johan regularly performs with close colleagues Laetitia Orlandi, Liesl van der Merwe, Danre Strydom, and others, at platforms such as the Wakkerstroom Music Festival, Odeion School of Music Concert Series (Bloemfontein), North West University School of Music (Potchefstroom), and the Chamber Music Collective (Johannesburg) in and around South Africa.
After obtaining a PhD from the University of Pretoria in 2017, Johan read towards an MMus degree in oboe performance at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 2018, under the tutelage of Jenny Johnson of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in New Zealand. Johan plays on a Howarth XL oboe, and apart from maintaining a full-time oboe career in South Africa, he is a professor at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.
