“Reference” is a new Selmer Paris concept which combines acoustic or
ergonomic characteristics of several famous previous Selmer Paris models
with the qualities of today’s top design and manufacture. The “Reference” series currently proposes two tenor saxophone versions: Reference 36 and Reference 54. Each member of the Reference series is designed to reflect the tone cololur of the a specific instrument. The 36 pays homage to the 1936 Super Balanced Action, whereas the 54 pays homage to the Mark VI.
The Reference Series is Selmer’s nod towards their hugely popular saxophones of the past, encapsulating the spirit of these fantastic instruments into a newly refined design. In the Reference 54, Selmer took inspiration from their hugely popular Mark VI - a strong centred sound with plenty of projection, whilst redesigning the neck, bore size and ergonomics. The result is an instantly recognisable sound in a sax that is a joy to play. Compared to many vintage instruments, the key work on the Reference 54 is smooth and easy to play with a modern layout that improves tuning stability and makes side and palm keys a lot more accessible.
