Asya Fateyeva, Saxophone
The ever-popular open-air concerts in the Residenz’s fountain courtyard exude a very special charm. Just the thing for our season finale! Our chief conductor, Joseph Bastian, has once again put together a program whose verve perfectly matches the summer mood. This time, it’s off to South America: Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos and Argentinian Alberto Ginastera combined the rhythmic drive of their homeland with the compositional refinement of European modernism. Astor Piazzolla made the formerly disreputable Argentine tango suitable for concert halls; in his most famous piece, he bid farewell to his father with yearning sounds. Darius Milhaud was considered the enfant terrible of the Parisian music scene in the 1920s; as an attaché to the French ambassador in Rio de Janeiro, he absorbed local sounds and integrated them into his works. Saxophone virtuoso Asya Fateyeva is a dynamic soloist who also moves easily between classical and other musical styles.
